Paedodontics |
Paedodontics is a branch of dentistry that specializes in treating children or can best be referred to as paediatric dentistry. Early infant’s dental caries is becoming common occurrence in our society compared to two decades ago. Early infant and child caries is mostly attributed to high sugary foodstuff our children are feeding on from the tender age. Parents and guardian alike have to know that children cannot effectively brush their teeth without good supervision and encouragement. We encourage parents to bring their children twice or once a year for check and instructions in our clinic, where we provide dietary counseling, teaching effective brushing techniques, and encouraging children to take care of their teeth. Quite often parents tends to associate medical syrups with early infant caries without realizing that infants can develop caries from the feeding bottle “bottle caries” when left for long time in the mouth of their infants, and that from the moment the teeth erupt into the mouth they need to be regularly cleaned and protect from sugary foodstuffs. Our concern is always to ensure that the milk teeth are preserved and taken care of until they are naturally shed off, thence our treatment with primary teeth is rather conservative and always we will try our level best to restored those with caries, stop progression of infections for those with infected pulps, do root canal were possible and institute scaling and polishing as means of maintaining good oral hygiene for our young patient. Our clinic provides sealants and topical fluoride as well for those in need. We advice parents to use high fluoride tooth paste for children with rampart caries and twice a day particularly brushing before going to bed is very important. Beside the routine practice of dealings basically with caries (tooth decay) in primary and permanent dentition we are taking care to observe and correct maliagnment at its early stage for proper alignment permanent dentition.
